Potpourri

Well, this week has been a pretty good one--we've been kept fairly busy, but not overly so. Emily got her hair trimmed, (complete with new bangs!), we went and had lunch with Daddy at his work, my brother, Kyle, and my mom have come over and played quite a bit (thank you!!!), and we've had some fun playdates as well.
One story from the week: On Wednesday morning, Emily's did AMAZING playing independently. I was trying to prepare dinner for the evening, baking bread, and doing some light cleaning while Christian napped. Normally, I don't get more than 5 solid minutes to any one task (let alone three) as Emily prefers that I play with her instead of by herself. However, she got busy with her princesses and new library books (not reading them, but making a house for the princesses out of them) and played for almost a 1/2 hour. I finished everything I needed to do in that time and then we were able to play with playdoh together before Christian woke up. It felt so good to see her using her imagination so independently (and for me to be able complete a task all at once!)

I also just wanted to post these pictures of the kids snuggling and giggling together. They're really such cute friends...I hope it lasts!

Preparing for our trip

We will soon be leaving for a fun-filled trip to New York! We will get to visit Cubby's family and spend some time playing with Grandma and Grandpa, aunts, uncles, and cousins! We're very excited for the whole trip in general as it will also give us a well-needed trip out of town!

As I am starting to prepare for the journey, I want to know if there is anything that anyone else who has recently traveled with children found they just HAD to have during the flight. Whether it be a certain toy or if you just know of something handy to have on hand while you travel, I'd love to hear your ideas and suggestions!

Sign me up! (Okay, I'm kidding, but it's just a little bit tempting!)

Church Unveils "Slow-Track" Program
- By Amy Chamberlain
SALT LAKE CITY

In order to better meet the needs of "our most average members," church representative Howard S. Jeppeson announced the creation of a new slow-track membership program. "This program caters to those members of the church who may not be top-level celestial material but who are still willing to put in a nominal effort toward their own salvation," he said.

The slow-track program includes the same components of normal churchmembership, but at a more relaxed pace. Members who sign on for the program are required to read scriptures and have personal and family prayer once aweek, attend church once a month, visit teach or home teach four times a year, and watch one session of general conference every other year. If slow-track members can commit to these requirements for five years, they can earn a temple recommend stamped with an S for "slow track," after which theyare expected to attend the temple semiannually. According to Jeppeson, the church may create a shorter, condensed version of the temple ceremony for S-track members "in order to better accommodate those members' shorter attention spans and lower levels of ambition.

"Social historian Jane Schippen, PhD, a long-time scholarly observer of Mormon society, hails the new slow-track program. "Mormonism pays a great deal of attention to its high achievers, like those who are stake president before they turn forty or women who have eight children and maintain a spotless house," she observed. Similarly, she continued, "Mormons spend alot of time and energy worrying about those on the other end of the spectrum, the less-actives." She sees the slow-track program as "a way to acknowledge and honor the vast majority of Mormons, those who will never hold high positions of leadership but who are nevertheless active - the sloggers, if you will."

Logan Stake president Gary L. Hackett agrees with Schippen and says that the new slow-track program "will prod the lazy ones into progressing at least alittle bit, which is an improvement." He estimates that implementing the slow track will cut administrative tasks, such as nagging phone calls to complete home or visiting teaching, by as much as 75 percent. "It's about time we recognized that not everyone in the church is that top ten percent of the celestial kingdom material," he notes. "And, really, that's okay. I mean, the bottom two levels of the celestial kingdom are supposed to be pretty good too, right?"

Most members seem happy with the soon-to-be-implemented system. "Let's face it," says local member Larry K. Whiting. "I'm not cut out for this high-paced, pressure-oriented Mormon lifestyle. I mean, home teaching four families every month? The scheduling alone takes way too much time. And thenI have to go over there and pretend I care about these people when I'd rather be home watching ESPN? Give me the slow-track program any day."Local member Kendra Koenig agrees. "Do you know how much fun it is trying to roust five kids out of bed for family scripture study and prayer at 6:30A.M? I am sick to death of nagging them about it, and you can believe it's not doing our family harmony any good." She praised the slow-track system for offering a more realistic temple-attendance schedule. "Like anyone who has a life can manage to get out there twice a month? This slow-track program is the answer to my infrequent prayers."

To the Silliest Dad Around!

Happy Father's Day, Cubby! The kids love their Daddy-o, and who wouldn't? Emily gets to soak him with water balloons and Christian gets to smack him in the face and play "hey-hey you!" (a game of chasing each other around the kitchen and living room, laughing hysterically). Whatta' Dad!

A Trip to the Firehouse!

This morning we joined Emily's friend, Maddy, and their little playgroup at the firehouse! The kids got a tour of the engines and all of the big "tools" that the firemen use--Emily liked the giant pick-ax! Christian liked the big hoses and looking underneath all of the engines. I would highly recommend a trip to the firestation this summer!

We're feeling good!

The last couple of days have been tough ones for us. However, we've been extremely blessed with a lot of support from family and friends and there are at least two possible homes out there for Peanut. We're hoping that we'll know within the next couple of days where exactly he'll be going. It's just going to take some time to sort everything out and for us to heal, both physically and emotionally.

Christian, however, is doing just terrific. He has bounced back like a champ and each day his face looks better. I had been questioning whether or not I'd be able to take pictures of Christian while he heals. For whatever reason, I just didn't know if I could. Yesterday though, he and Emily were playing and Emily said, "Mommy, get some pictures of us!" That cleared that question up! Things are almost back to normal--I just hover a bit more when Christian is walking around or playing!

When Animals Attack

Okay, the picture's not that good (this is Cubby, by the way - no relation to John). But, for those who haven't heard, Peanut bit Christian on Saturday night (this is not a picture of it happening - it's not even Peanut). Christian stumbled into Peanut, who was resting/sleeping. Peanut, who has not been feeling well (see post below) got startled and bit him on the face. Kathleen and I both freaked out and we rushed Christian and Emily (who were both screaming - Christian who was hurt, and Emily who got the crap scared out of her with the commotion) to the children's ER at Bergen Mercy (amazingly, I only had to run one red light). Christian was seen fairly quickly (we were in and out of the ER in 3 hrs) by a plastic surgeon (am I doing too many parantheticals?). He was pretty upset, but they put him a papoose thingy so he couldn't move and had us leave the room. I'm going to leave out the rest of the details (we don't know how many stitches the doctor had to use - we forgot to ask).

Anyways, we were pretty pissed at Peanut (I haven't pet him yet). He's been in lock down in the kitchen or in the backyard. We haven't let the kids near him. Now that we've had a couple days to think about it, we are heart broken. Peanut really has become a member of our family. The kids love him, especially Christian (who, surprisingly, is not afraid of Peanut and wants to see him still). Kathleen and I have shed many tears, because Peanut really hurt us. We know he is a good dog, but we cannot keep him. He has done something that can be forgiven, but not forgotten. We can tell he is sorry and heart broken too.

The reason for this post is to see if a good family (without kids younger than 10) would like to take him. He really is a good dog and we seriously doubt he will bite again. We've talked to the vet, and he agrees that Peanut is not a vicious dog (he's a golden retriever for crying out loud), and a better option (rather than putting him down) is to give him to a good family. So, if you know someone who wants a 2 year old golden retriever with a heart condition, let us know.

Well, after that scare, Christian is doing great. He looks like he got beat up (with plenty of bruising and swelling), but you wouldn't think it. He has seems even happier. He's even babbling more. He's still running around and teasing Emily, and loves to be tickled. He's still that same cute little boy. He's our beautiful boy. He'll continue being the same cute little Christian, just with a few minor scars. Besides, chicks dig scars, right?

Look at that smile!

A "Jonah" Day

Well, I think my previous post about Peanut must've jinxed him or something. This morning when we opened up the gate to let him outside, he couldn't get up. He just layed there, shaking. It was really scary; he couldn't get down the deck stairs or even stand up. The night before, we'd gone for a walk and he'd been just fine--pulling on his leash the entire time, as usual! He was fine when he'd gone to bed as well.

So, we took him into the vet's office where they gave him some medication (anti-inflamatories) and he rested all day. When he came home, he was very happy to be home and he was able to walk again, although he's not allowed to do stairs and is still being very cautious.

The doctors think that this development is unrelated to his heart condition. They think that it may be a pinched nerve or some sort of a mini-stroke in his spine. He's always had a funny way with his hips--ever since he was a puppy he'd hop down the stairs with his back legs and he's never liked the kids getting too close to them. In any case, we're going to be watching him for the next few days and hope he keeps improving like he did today.

In the meantime, I get to try and carry him up and down the deck stairs tomorrow so that he can go to the bathroom. This should be funny since he weighs almost 60 pounds and likes to wiggle around. I just hope I don't drop him or anything like that. At least tomorrow's Friday and Cubby will be around to do it this weekend. Poor little puppy--we sure love him!

Grandma Karen's Birthday BBQ

We had a fun evening tonight celebrating my mom's birthday---Harvey brought over chicken, hot dogs, and corn-on-the-cob for BBQing and we had a fun time playing with the family. Emily got her kicks in by hosing down Uncle Kyle and Allie on the trampoline--COOOOLLLLDD tap water! But, it was very hot and humid today so I'm sure it felt good...at first! Christian enjoyed going from one set of arms to another--very cute how he just wanted to make sure he was held by everyone.

Piggy-backing off of my friend Jenn's treasure hunt idea, I made a little map and had Grandma and Emily search for Grandma's gifts. Very cute. Grandma got some fun stuff...Emily, of course, "helped" her open everything. My Grandma Carolyn brought in homemade anglefood and chocolate cake and a homemade peach pie (a favorite of Mom's)...DELICIOUS!!

It was a fun group effort of a night; I just love soaking up these good times together as a family. Happy Birthday, Mom!
